As springtime keeps trying to sneak up on us, my mind turns to different recreational events I can share with my readers. One thing I have noticed is hands on farm activities to teach our kids where their food comes from in a fun and integrative way. Some farms have started wedding venues, some are looking for "Woofers".....people to live on their property in exchange for part time help, and then there's the Farm Adventure aspect, where kids and adults alike can come out and get some hands-on experience, and actually see where their food comes from.
I recently heard about the Red Barn Learning Farm in Hayfield, so I looked it up, and they have gone all out to provide the community with different things to do "on the farm" from May through October.
Brian and Brenna Scanlan, along with their children Wesley, Paisley and Conley have thought up a whole lot of fun things to do throughout the season for young and old alike. The season is kicked off with the Annual Egg Gathering at the Farm which is the Friday and Saturday before Easter. Due to the popularity of this event, advanced tickets are recommended. There are 4-day camps for kids, and one day camps as well. Many of the holidays feature fun days for Memorial Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Labor Day. What a great way to honor your parents and have fun at the same time! There are interactive play areas at the farm along with many animals to feed and pet. New activities are being added as we speak. There are Farm Fridays which are the public hours during the Spring/Summer Season (starts May 1 and hours are 9am-3pm) that sometimes include extra activities such as The Pink Pony Club, Llama Llama Red Pajama Story Time, Enchanted Unicorn Visits and Pints & Ponies. To find out more about these activities and more, you can visit the website at www.redbarnlearningfarm.com, email them at redbarnfarm@kmtel.com, or call with your questions or to book an event at (507) 272-7465.
Featured Farm Visits are field trips withgroups of kids along with teachers, Day Care providers and other kids' groups to be able to come out and enjoy the many learning aspects of farm living. A petting zoo is available, as well as a space with a picnic shelter that can be renter for picnics and parties. It is an event destination for your employee appreciation "Day Out", or your child's birthday party. You will find photo opportunities and gem mining, and in the fall season they are open on weekends for Goats and Goblins at the Halloween Party, mazes and pumpkins, and animals!!! So many animals!
So, plan ahead and make plans for some old fashioned farm fun for the season before they are all booked up, and be sure to tell them that Cheri sent you!
