Stanley Boe (Stan) was born July 25, 1946, to Norman and Jessie (Bryant) Boe on their farm in Hayfield, MN. He was the youngest of six boys: Peter, Art, Arlo, Burt, Ervin, and Stanley, and three girls, Liz, Margi, and Zoa.

When the family moved off the farm, they purchased a house in West Concord, MN, about a block from downtown. Norman, Stanley’s dad, did some blacksmithing and was known for his ability to splice together heavy ropes and save the farmers around West Concord money. It was a financial challenge raising a large family, but they never felt they lacked anything, and family was the most important. Norman eventually bought a building, and it became Boe Jeep.

It was a family tradition that everyone sitting around the dinner table had a chance to speak and be listened to. (I think that is where he got his gift of gab and storytelling) They raised chickens and rabbits for eating and butchered the pork and beef they purchased from farmers. His mother, Jessie, made sure there was always something for snacks after school. His favorite was his mother’s donuts. Norman, his dad, had to stay home on the farm during the war, while his older brothers served, so Norman made sure that his 6 boys joined the military in some capacity. Stanley served in the National Guard for 6 years during the Vietnam War.

Stanley and Tammy were married on a 21-degree day below, Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1970. Stanley had been leasing and running the Faribault Gift and Garden Center as a tourist gift shop. It included decorative garden concrete, gifts such as music boxes and glassware, and was a retail outlet for plants, trees, and shrubs grown at the West Concord nursery by his brother Arlo. As the years passed, it was a Garden Center/restaurant called the Faribault Barbecue. Mealey’s chocolate candy was made there, and Stanley added a huge assortment of cheeses from all over the world. He still complains about the “awful sharp Cheddar” sold in stores today, even though he always bought his Cheddar fresh from Wisconsin. The restaurant served breakfast and lunch. People would line up on Sundays to enjoy an old-fashioned turkey dinner and homemade pie. The Faribault Barbecue eventually moved to a new location called the Huckleberry Inn. So Stanley adjusted and renamed his place the Faribault Garden Center, and “grew his own petunias” and all the other garden varieties, flowers, and vegetables, as his brother Arlo had changed his business into restoring classic cars.

For Stanley, being in business was a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week business, as growing your own product meant you had greenhouses to keep heated or cooled and watered for the plants. He could tell you about a seed so small it was the size of a pin prick, and he created a tray with small holes that helped him sow the seed more evenly in a growing tray. He sold hundreds of Christmas trees and wreaths over the years, usually buying a supply of Norway and Scotch Pine from Wisconsin. In 2019, he retired having been a successful businessman for over 50 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Tamera (Tammy); by his children, Jason (Gwen) Boe, Heidi Boe and Sarah Buchel; by his grandchildren, Maddie, Parker, and Jozey Boe, Isaac Boe and Ruby Buchel; by his siblings, Ervin (Susie) Boe; Margaruite (Gregg) Albert and Zoa (Jim) Heckman; by his sisters-in-law Marilyn Boe, Merty Boe and his brothers-in-law, William Leonelli, Terrence (Ida) Morris and Micheal Sinn and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Jessie Boe; his in-laws, Lawrence and Jeannette Morris; siblings, Peter Boe, Arthur Boe, Arlo Boe, Burton Boe, and Elizabeth Leonelli; sisters-in-law Signora Boe, Lois Boe, and Tricia Sinn.
