I think most of us enjoy a night out to eat something different than what we normally eat. And having someone serve us and clean up after us is a treat as well! I was in Kasson recently, looking for articles for our newest Messenger location, and saw a Chinese restaurant at 25 West Main Street, so I had to go in and check it out.
It was beautifully appointed with Chinese decor and a sushi bar in the rear of the restaurant. I met Emily Yang who was behind the register, and asked if I could take a few minutes of her time. Fortunately for me, it was mid afternoon, and the restaurant was quiet.
The current Yang family who now own the space moved here from Philadelphia 3 years ago when Emily's aunt and uncle decided to sell, due to an injury to her aunt that kept her from the strenuous work in a restaurant. Emily is the hostess and the server, and her husband Yu is a specialty sushi chef, and will make your sushi fresh to order. I believe that is preferable to buying sushi from a gas station or a grocery store. Her sister Gina and brother-in-law Cao do all the cooking in the back. I noticed there was something missing, and realised there was no buffet. When I asked Emily about that, she said they prefer fresh made when it comes to any of the food on their menu, instead of steam trays with food sitting in them for hours at a time. Good choice!
I wanted to know why people should come to Haku Asian for dinner, and she replied, "A person shouldn't have to drive to Rochester for Chinese food. We want quality for our customers right here in Kasson. Everything is made fresh when ordered, and we serve large portions for very good prices. Most of our customers can order one meal and it will feed two people, or they can take the rest home to enjoy later.
The family felt very welcomed by the Kasson community, and have their home here, too. Emily's niece goes to school here, and they love the community of a small town.
