Come to a history event this month

Posted

If you have an interest in local history, plan to join us at the Dodge County Historical Society’s get-togethers during September. We have three events on our schedule.

During Big Iron at the fairgrounds in Kasson, our Log Cabin will be open, 9 to 5 Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7, with historic exhibits on trucking and gas stations. The Log Cabin is air conditioned, come sit awhile and share trucking stories with us.

A history discussion and tour is scheduled at the historic Westfield Church in Westfield Township on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 1:30 p.m. We welcome our Hayfield and Claremont area groups as well as all other interested people to this event. Built in 1907, the Westfield Church is a replica of a Lutheran Church in Hemsedal, Norway. Details of the founding of the city of Hayfield were found in a document in a drawer at the Museum, and we’ll share the contents at this meeting. We are also still looking for stories of the maternity homes in Hayfield. We’re hoping to hear more stories of Claremont and the surrounding area as well. The Westfield Church is located at 71829 120th Avenue, Blooming Prairie.

The West Concord Historical Society will partner with us in hosting a roundtable discussion with Richard Staub, a West Concord centenarian, along with an ice cream social, at the West Concord Historical Society auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. Richard has a dramatic life story, which includes being born in Germany, moving to the United States, and then fighting alongside U.S. troops against Germany in World War II. The West Concord Historical Society is at 600 First Street West in West Concord.

We hope to see you at one or more of our events. We’re fascinated with the many aspects of our history that have happened right here in the county where we live, and we look forward to sharing with our fellow Dodge County residents.
